Remove the Cover from Your Truck
- Retract the cover into the front
- Move the first and second panel apart slightly and locate the release clip on the passenger side. Press the clip to release the cover from the rail. If you have a removable pin instead of the clip, you will need to remove the pin.
- Wrap the nylon strap around the panel bundle a couple of times. This will serve to hold the panels together and provide a way to carry them.
- Move the passenger side toward the tailgate and begin lifting as soon as the bearings clear the rail.
- Remove the cover.
Now you're ready to proceed with replacing the rivets.
Source the Necessary Hardware
You can get these screws from your local hardware store, truss heads may not be required.
Remove the Rivets
You will need a drill and a 3/16” drill bit. Your objective is to drill off the head of the rivet so that you can remove the rivet body and replace it with a threaded fastener that was sent to you. The small metal washers will not be reused.
The first step is to hold the protruding end of the rivet so that it does not spin during the drilling process. Drill into the head of the rivet until it comes off.
Remove the bearing/spacer and pull the rivet out.
Reassemble using the threaded fastener. Tighten firmly, but do not over tighten. The hinge needs to pivot freely. Our experience is to tighten the nut firmly, then back off 1/8” of a turn.
